O Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia e Geofísica (INMG) sucedeu ao Serviço Meteorológico Nacional, que havia sido criado em 1946. O INMG surgiu da restruturação implementada pelo Decreto-Lei n.º 633/76, de 28 de Julho.
