Medina del Campo
Medina del Campo is a Spanish town and municipality in the province of Valladolid, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León, located 54 km from the provincial capital. Its municipal area covers an area of 153 km², includes the districts of Gomeznarro, Rodilana and part of the urbanisation of Las Salinas, and has a population of 20,090 inhabitants (INE 2023). The town of Medina del Campo is 725 metres above sea level, in the region of Tierras de Medina, and is crossed by the river Zapardiel.
It is one of the most economically important towns in the province. The economic activity of Medina del Campo is concentrated in agriculture, the furniture industry, commerce and the service sector, with industrial activity growing in recent years.
The urban growth of Medina del Campo during the second half of the 20th century resulted in the construction from the 1940s onwards of numerous groups of dwellings, such as those in the Ronda de Santa Ana, in the Avenida de la Constitución, and standing out by its dimensions the ones so-called as Pilar Primo de Rivera, built by the Obra Sindical del Hogar y de Arquitectura, and Simón Ruiz, as well as the block for the teaching staff of the Instituto Laboral. At the same time, commercial and health facilities were built, such as the Mercado de Ganados and the Centro de Salud.
The following decades were notable for the construction of educational buildings promoted by private initiative such as the Colegio Lope de Vega, governed by religious orders such as those known as San José or San Juan de la Cruz, or publicly owned, such as the Grupo Escolar in Matías Montero street, the Clemente Fernández de la Devesa, Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes or Obispo Barrientos schools. This period also saw the creation of sports facilities, such as the one known as Pablo Cáceres.
