Talavera de la ReinaTalavera de la Reina
Talavera de la Reina is the second most populated municipality in the province of Toledo, with 84.738 inhabitants (INE 2024) and a seat of judicial district. Located on the right bank of the Tagus River, it is situated on the Madrid-Lisbon route and has historically been an important city on this itinerary. Recently, its proximity and connectivity to the capital have led to its demographic growth and ability to attract technology industries. Its urban morphology is closely related to the Tagus, which widens as it passes through Talavera and forms a system of river islands and banks, densely populated with poplars and willows. Beyond its extraordinary river landscape, the city is renowned for its ceramic production, which began in the 15th century.
The demographic growth of the mid-20th century meant not only the expansion of the city but also the replacement of buildings in the historic centre. Urban expansion was predominantly directed towards the east, initially structured around Pio XII Avenue and several public facilities in the surrounding area, such as the Cuartel de la Guardia Civil, the El Prado Municipal Neighbourhood, the Prado Stadium, and later the Padre Juan de Mariana and Gabriel Alonso Herrera Secondary Schools. From the 1970s onwards, growth was concentrated in the Polígono de la Solana industrial estate, an expansion accompanied by high-quality public facilities such as the Antonio Machado and José Bárcenas schools and the 1º de Mayo Sports Centre. To the north, the Nuestra Señora de la Piedad neighbourhood and the San Juan de Dios School stand out, while in the western part of the city, the traditionally popular neighbourhood of Puerta de Cuartos is home to the Puerta de Cuartos Social Centre and the San Ildefonso and Hernán Cortés Schools. Also noteworthy are the city's healthcare facilities, such as the Nuestra Señora del Prado Hospital, the Centro Health Centre and the La Estación Health Centre.
