Montoro

Montoro is a Spanish municipality and town in the province of Cordoba, in the autonomous region of Andalusia. It belongs to the Alto Guadalquivir region of the province of Córdoba, 45 kilometres away from the provincial capital. The urban area is located between the Sierra Morena and the Andalusian plains, situated on a promontory in the interior of the meander formed here by the Guadalquivir River. The municipality covers 581 km² and has a population of 9203 inhabitants (INE 2022). Although located at the confluence of two important national routes, the A4-Autopista del Sur and the N-420 (Ciudad Real-Puertollano-Montoro), its strategic location has not led to significant industrial development and the municipality's economic base continues to be the cultivation of olive groves.

The town of Montoro was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1969. The urban area is notable for the use of the local stone "molinaza", a red sandstone, applied in both traditional and modern buildings. In the 20th century, the main urban area expanded to the right bank of the Guadalquivir – Barriada del Retamar – and, from the 1960’s onwards, in southern direction, heading for the transportation routes – highway and railroad. The construction of Avenida de Andalucía and of equipment as the Antonio Galán Acosta, Epora, Santos Isasa schools, the Guardia Civil Quarters, the Health Centre or the sport facilities have created a new civic centre for Montoro outside the historic ensemble.
