AlmeriaAlmería

Almería is the capital city of the easternmost province of Andalusia. The province of Almería has a sub-desert climate, with a natural risk of drought. Water scarcity has led to the development of technology for consumption and for intensive agriculture. The primary sector accounts for 16.6% of the provincial GDP, surpassing tourism at 11.5%. The city of Almería has 202,675 inhabitants (INE 2024) and an area of almost 300 km2. It stands out for its direct relationship with the sea, in the Gulf of Almería, and its port has regular connections with Melilla, Algeria and Morocco. Beyond the port, it has historically had poor land communications for a city of its size. Although work is underway in 2025 to connect the city to the high-speed train line (AVE), there is only one railway line in operation, the Linares-Baeza-Almería line. The airport is therefore of great importance for the mobility of people, even though it was created in 1968 due to the boom in the film industry and to transport the province's agricultural exports.

The city, of Caliphate origin, remained part of the Kingdom of Granada until 1489. The Modern Age brought stagnation, from which it would recover in the 19th century with the industrialisation of mining, grape exports and, from the 1960s onwards, intensive agriculture (the agricultural development of arid regions was supported by the CSIC in Almería), tourism and the marble and derivatives industry. The city was structured around the Paseo, which would later house the Courthouse, the Social Security Office and the Bank of Spain.

During the Civil War, the city remained on the Republican side and was the last Andalusian capital to be occupied by the Francoist army. In 1937, it was bombed by German battleships. After the war, reconstruction was slow, with prominent buildings such as the Gobierno Civil, the Provincial Health Delegation and the Bus Station, but above all with social housing such as in Barrio Regiones and La Chanca neighbourhood, where the buildings of the School, the CEPER and the La Chanca-Pescadería Centre also stand out. From the development period, the Sanitary Residence in Torrecárdenas and the schools of the Emergency Plan of Andalusia, Europa and Cruz de Caravaca stand out.
