Zamora
Zamora is a Spanish city and municipality, capital of the province of the same name, in the Autonomous Community of Castile and Leon. Its municipality covers an area of 149.28 square kilometres, including the hamlet of Carrascal, and has a population of 59,259 inhabitants (INE 2023). The city of Zamora is situated 652 metres above sea level, on the Meseta Norte, and is crossed by the river Douro.
The city of Zamora is the main commercial and administrative centre of the province, which has one of the lowest industrial fabrics in Spain. Its main economic activities are concentrated in the primary sector, agriculture and livestock farming, and the tourist industry.
It stands out for its Romanesque buildings, making it the city with the highest number and quality of Romanesque heritage in Europe. Its historic centre was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1973 (BOE, Decreto 520/1973).
